Record 75 p.c. students pass SSC exam

HYDERABAD MAY 1. For the third year in a row, the results of the Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examination took an upswing with 75 per cent students passing the examination this year. The pass percentage in the last two years was 67.89 and 65.11 respectively.

Warangal district recorded the highest pass percentage for the second consecutive year with 89.74 while Hyderabad district secured the lowest of 61.59 per cent pass. The Minister for School Education, M. Venkateshwara Rao, released the results at the Indira Priyadarshini auditorium in Public Gardens here this morning.

Boys outscored girls for the second consecutive year with a slightly higher pass percentage of 75.04 as against 74.94 per cent of girls. A total number of 6,64,954 regular students took the examination of which 4,98,692 passed while 3,39,198 students took the examination privately out of which 1,55,966 students cleared the examination registering a pass percentage of 45.98 per cent.

The Minister said that 904 schools secured 100 per cent results, which consisted of 580 private schools, 239 Zilla Parishad schools, 44 Government schools, 34 Residential Schools and 7 Municipal schools.

A total of 17 schools secured zero per cent results. Interestingly, there is no Government school in this category as they were 13 private schools, 3 Zilla Parishad schools and one municipal school.

"The supplementary examination will begin on May 28, 2003. Since the time available is limited, failed candidates are advised to appear for the supplementary examination without waiting for the results of recounting,'' the Minister said. The last date for remittance of fee to the heads of schools is May 17, 2003.

Candidates who desire to get their marks recounted should remit Rs. 150 per subject through the Government treasury challan into the State Bank of India or the State Bank of Hyderabad under the head of account concerned or through a DD in favour of Secretary to the Commissioner for Government Examinations, A.P., Hyderabad. Students have to apply within 30 days of the release of results for recounting of marks.

I.V. Subba Rao, Secretary, School Education, Manmohan Singh, Commissioner, School Education, and D. Ravindranadham, Director of Government Examinations, were among those present.
