Wakf Act to be amended

By Our Special Correspondent

Chennai May 1. With dues from Mutawallis to the Wakf Board mounting, the State Government has decided to amend the Wakf Act to disqualify those having arrears in payment of loans and contributions exceeding one year, from getting elected members of the Board.

Yesterday, the Labour Minister, Anwar Rhazza, introduced in the Assembly a Bill amending the Act, as Mutawallis of the Wakf had not paid up large sums towards contribution of the Tamil Nadu Wakf Board and also not repaid the loans received from the State or Central Wakf Council in time.

If the Mutawallis of the Wakf were allowed to become members or continue as members of the Board, they might not evince interest in better management of Wakfs, said the statement of objects and reasons.
