All set for constabulary recruitment

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI May 1 . A large number of vacancies in the police constabulary will soon filled with physical measurement and efficiency tests for selection of 8,431 grade II men candidates commencing on May 12.

The selection will be held at 14 centres — Chennai, Chengalpattu-East at St.Thomas Mount, Kancheepuram, Vellore, Salem, Coimbatore, Villupuram, Tiruchi, Thanjavur, Dindigul, Madurai, Ramanathapuram, Tirunelveli and Tuticorin.

When the recruitment process is completed, the extra burden on the personnel will ease. Also, traffic policing in towns located in rural areas, which at present suffers "mainly for manpower shortage", is expected to improve.

Of the 1.70 lakh applicants, the candidature of 10,000 was rejected on various grounds and the remaining have been chosen for physical efficiency tests, after verification of qualification certificates, say official sources.

Though it may appear that a massive selection process is taking place in one-go, the recruitment of 3,500 out of the total 8,431 constables is meant for 2001-2002, and the remaining are for 2002-2003. As recruitment in the police force has always been erratic, whichever party is in power, the selection of nearly 3,500 personnel has also been delayed. Though the process was set in motion as early as in 2000-2001, it did not take off. An official version for the delay is that the Government, after anticipating future vacancies and assessing the requirement, decided to club the selection for the two years. In the meantime, the maximum eligibility age was reduced from 27 to 24. However, one advantage of holding the selection for two years together is that the services of a large number of officials, including at the senior level, who are engaged for the process, will be required only once, it is pointed out. Last year, nearly 3,870 men constables were selected and after completion of training, posted to the battalions.

Also, 1,552 women constables were appointed and they were sent for training from March this year.
