Work for change of govt.: DMK

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI MAY 1. The DMK president, M.Karunanidhi, urged the working class to strive for a change of government in the State, as it could bring about a change. Participating in the May Day celebrations, organised by the DMK-affiliated Labour Progressive Federation, here today, Mr.Karunanidhi said in a democracy it was not possible to change a Government even if it indulged in "anti-worker" and `anti-people' activities. As workers and people were responsible for a party coming to power, they should unseat the rulers through democratic means.

He listed welfare measures initiated by the erstwhile DMK regime for different sections of the working class, which included a paid holiday on May Day, 20 per cent bonus for corporation employees and welfare boards for unorganised workers.

He hoped that the workers by now realised the difference between the DMK regime, which strove for workers' welfare and the present Government, which gradually deprived workers of their benefits. Earlier the former DMK Ministers, Arcot Veerasami, Durai Murugan, and K.Ponmudi, lambasted the AIADMK Government for its anti-worker policies.
