Scheme for indigent AIADMK workers

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI May 1. Rallies, flag hoisting and gate meetings marked the May Day celebrations, organised by trade unions and political parties throughout the State today.

While they expressed their solidarity with the working class in its fight against globalisation and privatisation, they wanted it to be vigilant against any move that would deprive it of its rights and privileges.

The Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, launched a welfare programme for indigent workers belonging to the AIADMK Workers Federation. Each worker would be given Rs. 25,000. This year 52 beneficiaries received the grant from the Chief Minister at the party headquarters here. The party also conducted public meetings throughout the State .

Addressing a meeting here, the AICC secretary, G. K.Vasan, said the Cente and the State Government failed to protect workers' interests.

The TNCC president, S.Balakrishnan, wanted the people and parties to launch a campaign to bring the Government to its knees. The CPI(M) and the CPI hoisted flags in their party offices.
