Letters to the Editor
Sir, Civil servants are selected for their intellectual capacity, administrative flair, variety and depth of interest, ability of social cohesion, leadership, intellectual and moral integrity. These can be present in any academic discipline. Debarring a person with a particular qualification will lead to inbreeding and loss of diversity. As far as subsidy is concerned, it is an investment and every individual has the duty to excel in whatever job or career he chooses. Students at IITs pay 45 per cent of total expense in terms of fees, which is much higher than that in many Central universities. Secondly, if an IIT graduate pursues some other profession, does that mean `money going down the drain?' If it is so, can we say that people like late Anil Aggarwal (environmentalist), Sandip Pandey (Magsaysay award winner & social activist), or Manohar Parrikar (Goa CM) or Jagmohan Mundra (film-maker) represent `precious taxpayer's money down the drain?'
