Letters to the Editor
Sir, So much publicity is given in all media to the `auspiciousness' of the `Akshaya Tritiya' for buying in general, and for buying gold and jewellery in particular! Many of the older generation will recall that `Akshaya Tritiya' was once considered for its auspiciousness for giving charities to those in dire need Vedic pundits used to be given a `package' consisting of a pair of chappals, umbrellas, hand fans along with a mudpot of fine curd rice all meant apparently to alleviate the harshness of the hot weather of the season. The point is: why don't our media emphasise the `multiplier effect' of the charities made on that auspicious day? We have enough of `acquisitive' tendencies all-round is it not appropriate to promote the `opposite' of such trends in the larger interests of society?
K.Vedamurthy,
