Protests continue over death of youth

By Shujaat Bukhari

SOITENG (LASJAN) MAY 2. Protests against the murder of a 19-year-old boy, Javed Ahmed Magray, on Wednesday night, allegedly at the hands of the Army, continued to rock this area for the second day today, even as a case has been registered against soldiers and a magisterial inquiry ordered.

A senior Hurriyat leader, Javed Mir, was arrested today along with eight others for protesting the killings. Mohammad Yaseen Malik and Javed Mir led a protest condemning the "brutal killing'' and demanded the intervention of international human rights organisations to stop the "unabated abuse of human rights in Kashmir". Javed Mir later led a protest in the Maisuma area of Srinagar. Police burst teargas shells to disperse them.

On Thursday, thousands protested against the killing and blocked the national highway for many hours. It is alleged that a party of soldiers of the 119 Territorial Army of Assam regiment led by Lt. Verma swooped on the house of Magray and dragged him out of his room.

The Army authorities, however, were tightlipped. "PRO sahib bahar hein'' was the response to repeated telephone calls made to the office of the Defence spokesman here.
