India makes it to World Group

NEW DELHI MAY 2. The second-seeded Indian under-16 team defeated Hong Kong 2-1 in the quarterfinals of the Asia-Oceania zonal competition, and booked a berth in the World Group final of the Junior Davis Cup tennis tournament in Jakarta on Friday.

Rupes Roy played the key role for India as he won both his singles and doubles matches. Rupesh beat Xiao-Peng Lai 6-2, 7-6 (8-6) in the first singles and later partnered Sumit Prakash Gupta to beat Xiao-Peng Lai and Martin Sayer 6-3, 6-4 in the decisive doubles. Sanam K. Singh, playing the No.1 position for India, went down 0-6, 6-3, 2-6 to Martin Sayer.

In the semifinals, India will meet the third-seeded Korea which beat the fourth-seeded Thailand 3-0. In the other quarterfinals, the top-seeded Indonesia beat the eighth-seeded Uzbekistan 2-1 and the fifth-seeded Chinese Taipei defeated the sixth-seeded Sri Lanka 3-0.

The top four teams in the Asia-Oceania will make it to the World Group competition to be held later in the season.
