Archery
By Our Special Correspondent
On the opening day of the three-day meet, the duo called all the shots in FITA round where 35 men and 11 women shot arrows over four distances. The men shot at targets kept at 90m, 70, 50 and 30m while the ladies faced targets placed at 70m, 60, 50 and 30m distances. At the end of the day, 32 men and eight women stayed in contention as per their ranking obtained from the FITA round. The second day on the morrow will see them contesting in Olympic round in league basis to select 16 men and eight women for the Olympic round knock-out on the final day on Sunday. The knockout round will have three matches instead of one and the winner will be decided by the best of three matches and not by the scores. Top eight men and four women will be eligible for prize money. On a hot and windy day at the SAI, Eastern Centre, the archers found it difficult to control the arrows in the longer distance owing to cross wind. Yet, Dola was hardly troubled by the mediocre opposition as she won all the four distances with scores of 317 points (70m), 334 (60), 320 (50m) and 344 (30m) for a total of 1315, highest among the women. Satyadev Prasad found the going tough over the 90m distance to end third with a total of 299. The event was won by junior Asian champion Jayanta Talukdar of Jharkhand with a score of 302. Veteran Muni Ram Tirkey of Army Sports Institute (ASI) finished second with 300. Thereafter, there was no stopping Prasad as he won the 70m (329 points), 50m (340) and 30m (354) to end with 1322, the only men to break the 1300 points barrier. Ved Kumar of Ordnance finished second overall with 1294 points having taken second position in the 70m and 30m and third in 50m. Prabhat Kumar of ASI was third overall with 1284. Out of 35, three were eliminated. They were Kapil of Uttar Pradesh (1134 points), Avdesh Raghav of Jharkhand (1183) and Chungda Sherpa of ASI (1205 points). In the distaff side, Chekrovolu Swuro of Andhra Pradesh finished second with a total of 1293 points. Reena Kumari of Jharkhand followed her with 1283. The three eliminated archers were Bansaralin Dhar of Jharkhand (1170), Tira Samanta of West Bengal (1121), who came out of retirement, and veteran Jhanu Hansda of Jharkhand (1114), now into active coaching at the Tata Academy.
