BSF, BDR meet resolves to defuse border tension

By Haroon Habib

DHAKA May 2. A five-day conference between the border forces of Bangladesh and India ended here on Thursday with a resolve to defuse border tension and reduce all types of cross-border crimes through mutual cooperation. The meeting between teams led by the Border Security Force chief, Ajay Raj Sharma and the Bangladesh Rifles chief, Major General Jahangir Alam Chowdhury discussed the killing of Bangladeshi citizens along the border, push-in attempts etc., sources said.

It also discussed construction of establishments within 150 yards of the zero line, trafficking in women and children, smuggling and other matters of mutual interest. The meeting held at BDR Headquarters here decided to give instructions to the border guards of both sides to be more alert and sincere in maintaining cordial relations, a BDR press release said.

The DGs of the BDR and BSF after endorsing `joint records of discussions' told journalists that the exchange of fire between the BDR and BSF at the northern Panchagarh segment even when the conference was on was `unfortunate.' The border guards would be directed not to allow such incidents, they said adding that a flag meeting between the BDR and BSF was held on the issue.

Replying to a question the BSF chief alleged that ``some Bangladeshi nationals are illegally staying in India.'' However, the BDR chief said ``no such question was raised in the meeting as no Bangladeshi nationals are illegally staying in India and there was no evidence to prove the allegation either.''

He also rejected the allegation of Bangladeshi support to Indian separatists. ``There is no place for separatists and terrorists inside Bangladesh territory,'' he said.
