By Our Special Correspondent

Hyderabad May 2. Next elections to the Assembly or the Lok Sabha in the State may be held with photo-identity cards to be used by the electorate as a must.

This will be so because, the coverage by EPICs (electorate photo-identity cards) in the State is expected to reach 85 per cent by August-end, the minimum percentage prescribed by the Election Commission as "sufficient'' for a State going for EPICs as a must.

Indicating this at a press conference here today, he Chief Electoral Officer, M. Narayana Rao, and the Joint CEO, Nimje Rajendra, said, the present strength of the electorate in the State was 5.5 crores with reference to January 1, 2003, as the qualifying date.

Of them, 3.35 voters had already been given EPICs.

They said, the programme of issuing EPICs to residual voters was commenced in the State on April 23 and the first round was over in almost all the districts while it was in progress in Hyderabad-Secunderabad Assembly constituency-wise.
