Naxal leader killed in encounter

ANANTAPUR May 2. The central organiser of the Talakona dalam (Chittoor district) of People's War, V. Krishna alias Bhupati (27) was killed in an exchange of fire with the police in the Batrapalli forest area of Talupula mandal in the district in the wee hours of Friday. Five other naxalites escaped.

According to the police, a special party was conducting combing operations on the information that some persons were moving in the area with weapons, when they came across six armed naxalites. The naxalites opened fire on the police on watching the latter.

Bhupati was killed and others succeeded in fleeing when the police opened fire in retaliation. The naxalite was carrying a reward of Rs. 2 lakhs on his head. He belonged to Kalagalla village in Kudair mandal.

He developed association with the Radical Students' Union in 1996 when he was studying in Anantapur and later joined the PW. He worked in the Penna Ahobilam and Chitravathi dalams in the district before being shifted to the Nallamala Forest Division. Later he was made the central organiser of the Talakona dalam.

He was allegedly involved in cases like blasting the house of former TDP legislator, P. Keshav, exchange of fire with the KS group of CPI(ML) among others committed by the Penna Ahobilam dalam.

It is learnt that he was in Talupula as he had married a woman from that place.

According to the SP, Anil Kumar, Bhupati was also accused in two murder cases.
