Talking to presspersons, Mr. Viswanathan said, whenever labour issues were taken up the government was seen developing an attitude of intolerance. Managements were also adopting a policy of sending workers out for forming unions. Referring to the PCC president, V. Narayanasamy's remark at a function recently that the Communist parties were responsible for the closure of industrial units here, he said the history of the AITUC would show that it was a champion of the welfare of the workers from the day of the trade union movement in1920. Several industrial units were closed because of mismanagement and failure of the government to keep the industries under control, he said. Mr. Narayanasamy should withdraw his remarks against the communist parties, he said. The Left parties would soon launch an agitation against Mr. Narayanasamy. Because of the policies of the Congress Government as many as 12,739 mandays were lost, he said. Several industries were drawing out excessive subsoil water in Kalapet and recently a painting producing unit had attempted to set up a unit inspite of the definite threat to the environment and ecology. V. S. Abishegam, the AITUC secretary referring to the report of the Special Industrial Tribunal for upward revision of wages of the workers in the AFT mill, said the stand of the Industries Minister, M. Chandirakasu that modernisation of AFT mill could not be launched because of lack of cooperation from the workers' unions was incorrect.
