The Deputy Commissioner of Police (North), Narayana Gowda, said the burglars broke the door latch and entered the house. All the inmates were asleep when they ransacked the house for about half-an-hour. As they did not get any valuables, they are said to have snatched the gold ornaments worn by Mr. Balakrishnan's wife and daughter, Deepa, a journalist. When the other inmates woke up, the burglars threatened them, saying they were armed with a pistol. They escaped under the cover of darkness, Mr. Gowda said. He said the accused did not display any firearm. The house had a special door with iron grills, but the inmates had not locked it, Mr. Gowda added. In another incident, four men, who came on two two-wheelers, waylaid Prabhakar, a building contractor, who was going on a scooter on Rampura Main Road, early on Thursday, and robbed him of Rs. 13,000 in cash. Police said they approached Mr. Prabhakar, seeking the direction of tea stall. They then told him that that they were armed with lethal weapons and asked him to part with the valuables and cash he had. Killed in mishaps: Dhanalakshmi (32), who was taking a morning walk on 13th cross, near Ring Road, J.P. Nagar was killed when a lorry which came from behind, hit an electricity pole and knocked her down on Friday. Police said the victim died on the spot. In Frazer Town, Channappa (45), who works for a mason, was killed when a lorry knocked him down from behind at New Colony, Jeevanahalli. He was crossing the road when the incident occurred. He died on the spot. The drivers involved in both the cases are said to be absconding. Arrested: The City police arrested four men, who allegedly used to extort money from people at night in isolated places, and reportedly recovered six gold chains and two gold rings from them. Police said eight cases of extortion reported from Wilson Garden area were solved with the arrest of Anand, alias Jani, Vadivelu, Kumar, alias Kolvi, and Muruga, alias Yattiyamma, all of K.S. Garden, Lalbagh Road. In another case, the Frazer town Police arrested four of the six men, who had allegedly kidnapped Shoeb Sharief of Mosque Road, Frazer town on April 25. The accused had demanded a ransom of Rs. 2 lakh to set him free, but had set him free after asking him to bring Rs. 25,000. The arrested persons were identified as Sadiq, Babu, alias Shafi, Inayatulla Basha, Ejaz, alias Syed Ajaj. Two men, who used to snatch gold chains from women trying to board buses, were arrested by the Upparpet Police. The police recovered two gold chains and one mangalya sutra, from the accused, Jagadish (20) of Tavarekere and Manjunath, alias Ajay, of Jakkarayanakere. The Byappanahalli Police arrested R. Jayasheelan (25) and recovered four car stereos worth Rs. 40,000, which he had allegedly stolen from cars parked in front of houses. The accused was released on bail recently.
