Mariswamy takes charge as Police Commissioner

By Our Staff Reporter

BANGALORE May 2. S. Mariswamy, who took over as the Commissioner of Police from M.D. Singh on Friday, hinted at some changes in the near future in the "procedures and policies'' followed by the City police. Mr. Mariswamy told presspersons that his objective was to make the City police the "best force in all the respects.'' The growing City needed good policing, he added

Announcing that his chamber was open to the public anytime, he said: "we are there only for the public, all the time.'' He welcomed all suggestions and criticism. Good ones would be implemented.

He believed that "rowdyism" could be tackled at the police station level, and there was no need to form squads for the purpose. He would think of forming them only if the police stations could not deal with "anti-social elements". He promised to take "all measures'' to make policemen at the police station level more people-friendly.

Asked whether the City police had adequate men to provide security to the increasing number of dignitaries visiting the City, he said "adequacy is a matter of subjectivity.'' However, if necessary, a proposal would be sent to the Government for recruitment of more men.

Mr. Singh, who has been posted as the Commandant of Home Guards, said he was ashamed that he had not done anything remarkable during his tenure of a little over six months.

"What I have done as Commissioner is there for all of you to see,'' he stated. Six months are not much for a police commissioner, but if any improvement had taken place during his term, all the credit should go to the officers and the policemen who worked with him. In a police setup, individuals did not matter much. However, he expressed the confidence that Mr. Mariswamy would emerge as an outstanding Police Commissioner.

Mr. Mariswamy took the baton from Mr. Singh to mark his taking over of the new office.
