Govt. performed well: Mayawati

By J. P. Shukla

LUCKNOW MAY 3. The Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister, Mayawati, today expressed her total satisfaction over the performance of her coalition Government, on the completion of the first year of her rule.

Talking to newspersons at her official residence here, Ms Mayawati said that when she took over office on May 3 last year she had fixed two priorities before her: improvement in the law and order situation and boosting the State's economy. Today, when she was making an assessment of her Government's functioning she found that enough had been done on both fronts. ``There has been 70 per cent decrease in the crime graph and action has been taken against 99 per cent of criminals. In 98 per cent registered cases, investigations have been completed and strong action have been taken against the most notorious of criminals.''

She also mentioned creation of a separate police force for the security of important personalities and sensitive places and setting up of the State Human Rights Commission as other achievements of the Government. As far as improvement on the economic front was concerned, she said the State had achieved maximum revenue collection in any one financial year since Independence, the quantum of collection during the year being Rs 12,575 crores. This was Rs 2,241 crores more than the revenue realised during the preceding year, a record.

The U.P. Congress president, Arun Kumar Singh "Munna'', addressing newspersons at his party office, said Ms Mayawati had brought disgrace to the good name of U.P. during her one year of rule. The 18 crore people of the State had felt insulted on so many occasions because of the intemperate language used by the Chief Minister, her undignified conduct and activities.
