G.V. commits suicide

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI MAY 3. Noted film producer, G. Venkateswaran (55), was found dead at his residence on Harrington Road, Chetput, sending shock waves throughout the film industry. His brother-in-law found Venka-<243>teswaran's body hanging from a ceiling fan this morning.

Popularly known as G.V., he had produced several films, including `Thalapathi', starring Rajnikanth and `Nayagan' starring Kamal Hassan. G.V. had also floated a public limited company, G.V. Films Ltd, which produced and distributed films.

As news spread about the tragedy, hundreds of fans and members of the film industry thronged the residence.

Among the first callers was Rajnikanth, who came along with his wife, Latha Rajnikanth. Several other film personalities, including Vijaykanth and Prabhu, were seen standing shell-shocked.

"He was found hanging from a dhothi tied to the ceiling fan. No suicide note was found near the body. G.V.'s brother-in-law was the first to notice the body. As G.V. did not turn up at office, his brother-in-law came home to verify and found him hanging. The front door was open. G.V. was alone in the house at the time of the incident. His wife is away in Kodaikanal, the daughter is in the U.S. and son is in Delhi. His brother Manirathnam was also away in Kolkata", the JCP (Central), M.K. Jha, told The Hindu. The body was removed to Kilpauk Medical College Hospital and later returned to the house, Mr. Jha added. The president of the South Indian Film Chamber of Commerce, Mohan Sharma in his condolence message described G.V. as a "man of few words and great deeds.

The Indian film industry had lost a dynamic leader whose contributions will be remembered for a long time".
