Letters to the Editor
Sir, Your Editorial `Chauvinist Politics' ( April 29 ) is timely. The Shiv Sena supremo, Bal Thackeray's earlier fulminations against immigrants from the South, after an initial bouyance, floundered on the rock of Indian nationalism. After being in the gaddi for some years, Maharashtrians themselves have rejected him and his party at the hustings. Now Mr. Thackeray is fomenting Marathi sub-nationalism to shore up the Sena's image and fortune with an eye on the vote bank. India's ethos is synergetic in nature and it will survive diversionary tactics like these.
