This Day That Age
From the Editorials: Sympathy will go out to the families of the 43 who died in the Comet crash near Calcutta. The jet, operated by BOAC has carried thousands of people for over a year without a single mishap involving the lives of passengers a fine safety record for this new revolutionary flying machine. There were two previous Comet accidents one in Rome in October last, and another in Karachi last March. Both happened during take-off; 43 persons on board escaped without serious injury in Rome, but the entire 11 crew were killed in Karachi. The official expert enquiry concluded that pilot error in not strictly adhering to the precise, prescribed take-off technique was the cause.
