'SARS patients recovering after taking tulsi'

By Our Special Correspondent

Chennai May 5. The SARS-afflicted patients are recovering from a bout of fever and breathlessness by taking tulsi, turmeric and pepper, the Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, informed the Assembly today.

Crush a tulsi plant with roots, mix it with water and add a teaspoonful each of turmeric powder and pepper powder. Low-heat the two glassful of concoction until it reduced to half a glass. Drink it twice a day before food and the virus gets controlled, the Chief Minister said, reading out a suo motu statement in the Assembly today.

In Singapore too, natural medicine was being used to contain the spread of SARS and some Singaporeans were buying turmeric and tulsi from Tamil Nadu for this purpose.

According to the Siddha and Ayurveda system of Indian medicine, tulsi, turmeric and pepper contained anti-viral active ingredients. Similarly, papaya, which contained anti-oxidants, could also be used as a medicine for SARS, she suggested.

Earlier, during question hour, her party MLA, Valarmathi Jebaraj, suggested that an `Ada thoda' concoction provided by a Siddha centre in Madurai could be effective in fighting SARS. The Health Minister, S. Semmalai, said its effectiveness would be examined.
