Chief Secys. of only 18 States have been summoned by SC

By Our Legal Correspondent

NEW DELHI MAY 6. With reference to the news item, "SC directive to 21 Chief Secretaries" in The Hindu dated May 6, it is clarified that Chief Secretaries and Advocates-General of only 18 and not 21 States have been summoned by the Supreme Court for their appearance on May 9.

As the seven States of Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Sikkim, Madhya Pradesh and Goa had complied with the Shetty Commission's recommendations on revised pay scales for judicial officers, their Chief Secretaries and Advocates-General have been excluded from personal appearance.

The Chief Secretaries and Advocates-General of 18 States — Assam, Chattisgarh, Gujarat, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Jammu and Kashmir, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Manipur, Meghalaya, Orissa, Punjab, Rajasthan, Uttaranchal, Uttar Pradesh, Tripura and West Bengal — which had not complied with the recommendations, have been directed to appear in the court on May 9.

The Attorney-General, Soli Sorabjee, stated that so far as the Union Territories were concerned, the Union of India had substantially complied with the report. In view of this submission, the court directed the Centre to file an affidavit on or before May 9.

'T.N. has implemented orders'

Our Chennai Special Correspondent reports:

The Tamil Nadu Home Secretary, Syed Munir Hoda, said in a statement: "I would like to point out that the Government of Tamil Nadu has implemented the Supreme Court orders and that has been taken note of by the Supreme Court and Tamil Nadu is not among the States asked to appear before the Supreme Court on 9th of May 2003".
