Govt. unveils CMEY action plan

By Our Special Correspondent

Hyderabad May 6. The Government has unveiled the CMEY Action Plan for 2003-2004 according to which Rs. 160 crores will be spent, for forming 10,000 groups, and spur economic activity by them through self-help ventures.

The plan was released at a press conference by the Secretary and the Director for Youth Services, Chandana Khan, and G. Kamalavardhan Rao, respectively after a meeting of heads of CMEY programme.

The focus of activity this year would be on ventures which have a track record of viability and success. Also, the plan was to train 10,000 boys from different districts for army recruitment. The department achieved good results with the selection of 7,000 trainees last year.

The focus this year would also be to train 1,000 candidates as insurance agents in addition to another 2,000 members under the Maarpu in association with Livelihood Advancement Business School of Dr. Reddy Labs, and to supply 500 digital camera units to benefit 1,500 members.

The officials said, the CMEY groups were working on 150 products which were identified as having a market, including dhabas, florists, Tirupati-type caps, paper plates, mini-super bazars, kirana shops etc.

An officer has been designated to identify the items which were in demand and evolve strategies to market them and guide the groups accordingly.

Chandana Khan said they were contemplating to set up commercial complexes by the side of the Vijayawada-Hyderabad highway apart from dhabas. This was being taken up as the highway happens to be the busiest corridor in the State.

Mr. Kamalavardhan Rao said the achievement fell short of the target during 2002-03 with only 5,012 groups being activated benefiting 75,180 members, as against 6,889 groups which were formed.
