Prem Chand may be back in syllabus

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI MAY 6. Stung by the controversy over the replacement of a work by the renowned Hindi writer, Prem Chand, with one written by Mridula Sinha of the BJP in the high school curriculum for Hindi, the Union Human Resource Development Minister, Murli Manohar Joshi, is said to have told the Central Board of Secondary Education to make amends.

In view of the flak that this move of the CBSE has drawn, a meeting of the Hindi committee has been called on Wednesday to review the curriculum. Sources said the committee would in all likelihood restore the work of Prem Chand in the curriculum to settle the issue that had been raised in both Houses of Parliament also. On Monday, the Opposition members in the Rajya Sabha objected to the decision to replace Prem Chand's "Nirma'' with Mridula Sinha's "Jyon Mehandi Ke Rang''. Also, attributing motives to this decision, they demanded that the decision be revoked.
