Meet on VAT put off

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI May 6 . The Union Finance Minister, Jaswant Singh, who had to reply to the debate on the Finance Bill in the Rajya Sabha today postponed the meeting proposed to be held with the empowered committee of the State Finance Ministers on implementation of value added tax (VAT). Though Ministry sources maintained that the meeting had not been scheduled at all, Asim Dasgupta, committee convener and West Bengal Finance Minister, had yesterday confirmed it as well as the agenda of deciding whether some States could implement VAT by June 1.

In any case, the crucial meeting did not take place though it could now be held within the next few days. Mr. Dasgupta was to meet Mr. Singh before taking a final decision on implementing VAT in 15 States by the original deadline of June 1. The committee is keen on implementing VAT in at least nine States initially though the Centre is opposed to a "patchwork'' approach.
