DHAKA: A magazine editor arrested on extortion charges was targeted by police for highlighting the case of a missing reporter, his family alleged on Wednesday. Mahmudul Haq, editor of Upanagar magazine, was arrested on Tuesday night in Dhaka, Bangladesh's capital, police said. The newsmagazine is based in Sitakund, an industrial town in Chittagong district, 215 km southeast of Dhaka. Mr. Haq was visiting Dhaka to press authorities to do more to trace Atahar Siddik Khasru, a friend and reporter in Sitakund for a Dhaka-based newspaper, Ittefaq, who has been missing since April 30. Mr. Haq's family accused police of arresting the editor to harass him for aggressively pursuing the missing reporter's case and criticising police for failing to find him. Last month, a local leader of Prime Minister, Khaleda Zia's Bangladesh Nationalist Party, Nurul Islam, filed a complaint accusing Mr. Haq of extortion and intimidation of businessmen.
