137 MPs submit memo to PM

By Our Legal Correspondent

NEW DELHI May 9. An appeal signed by 137 MPs from both the Houses of Parliament was today submitted to the Prime Minister, Atal Behari Vajpayee, seeking the release of R.R. Gopal, Editor of the Nakkeeran biweekly, detained under POTA. The memorandum said the country had witnessed the blatant misuse of POTA in the arrest of Gopal, who was sent by the States of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka as one of the negotiators to negotiate with forest brigand Veerappan to secure the release of film star Rajkumar.

The appeal handed over to the Prime Minister by a delegation led by the Union Minister, T.R. Baalu, sought expediting the decision of the Review Committee set up under POTA on priority so as to create confidence of law-abiding citizens of the country in lawmakers and ensure freedom of the Fourth Estate. They wanted the case under Gopal to be taken up at the earliest.
