Lecturer held under POTA

MUMBAI MAY12. A part-time lecturer at the Pune-based National Defence Academy, Anwar Ali, who was arrested under POTA last night in connection with the March 13 bomb blast in a suburban train at Mulund here, was today remanded to police custody till May 26.

The blast had claimed 11 lives and injured 70 passengers.

Ali was picked up from Modikhana of Pune a couple of days ago, and arrested by the city Crime Branch-CID last night, a police officer said today.

Ali, though not on the NDA rolls, was teaching Urdu on an "ad hoc" basis. According to sources in the Pune police, he had been appointed only two months ago to teach Urdu to the cadets. Police sources said that Anwar had been associated with the outlawed Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) and allegedly provided shelter to three Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terrorists who were gunned down by Mumbai police in an encounter on March 29.

These terrorists included Abu Sultan, the Southern Commander of the LeT.

Ali's name figured in the diaries of Sultan, which were recovered after he was killed in an encounter with the Andheri unit of Criminal Intelligence Unit.

Editor remanded

Bhat, arrested on Friday night for receiving funds for pro-Pakistan militant outfit Hizb-ul Mujahideen, was produced before Special Judge S.N. Dhingra who remanded him to police custody till May 17 to facilitate his interrogation.

Police had recovered Rs 6.5 lakh from the possession of Bhat who had received the money near the walled city. A wristwatch with an in-bulit camera, a mobile phone and Chinese pistol and magazines were also recovered. — UNI, PTI
