Mulayam launches 'oust Mayawati' rally

By J.P. Shukla

LUCKNOW MAY 12. Thousands of Samajwadi Party workers today staged a demonstration here calling upon the State's people to "throw out" the Government headed by the Chief Minister, Mayawati, "who had unleashed a reign of terror against her political opponents".

The party workers, who had reached Lucknow from various parts of the State, set out from the party office on Vikramaditya Marg shouting slogans such as "Sarhi gali Sarkar ko ek dhakka aur do" (give one more push to this rotten Government), "Jiska jalwa kayam hai, uska naam Mulayam hai" (Mulayam is the name of the person whose clout remains undiminished) and "Jo hamse takrayega, choor choor ho jayega" (the one who dares to come in our way would be crushed to pieces).

Led by Mulayam Singh and other senior leaders, the demonstrators went through the thoroughfares in the Hazratganj and Kaiserbagh areas covering a distance of 5 km before reaching the Collectorate where the demonstration turned into a rally.

Mr. Yadav exhorted the party workers to be prepared for a more determined fight against this "autocratic government".

Mr. Yadav said that political forces such as the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Bahujan Samaj Party were not the natural product of social changes taking place in the country and had emerged on the "strength of communal and casteist appeals".

The SP's struggle was, therefore, a struggle against communal and casteist forces who had grabbed power by dint of an unholy alliance but that had resulted in a deep downslide of U.P. in every field.

The demonstration was the culmination of the first phase of the Samajwadi Party's agitation named "halla bol" (take to confrontation) launched on April 19 to pull down the BSP-BJP coalition Government in U.P.

During the three weeks since the agitation had started, party workers have taken out cycle rallies to spread the political message to every nook and corner of the State. Mr. Yadav has compared his struggle with the movement led by the late Jayaprakash Narayan.
