The GMI President and Managing Director, Aditya Vij, said at the launch news conference that the premium hatchback would be available in two versions 1.4 and 1.6 litre petrol engines with the sport price tags of Rs. 4.39 lakhs and Rs. 4.65 lakhs (ex-showroom, Delhi) respectively. The Opel Corsa Sail sports features such as crash sensor, pollen filter and power window switches. According to him, the Indian subsidiary of the U.S. car major aims at doubling sales of Corsa from 7,000 units. The rolling out of the new car signifies the second phase of GMI in the country. Having consolidated its position in the country, he said GMI launched the Chevrolet brand and now added hatchback as part of the plans to target volumes to mark the second phase of the company since its inception here. "We have already invested Rs. 1,200 crores in India which would go up to Rs. 1,300 crores at our plant in Halol, Gujarat. The major chunk of investment would be for the future launches," he said. Declining to spell out the cars to be rolled out, Mr. Vij said "There are new products in the pipeline. The parent company gives due importance to its Indian subsidiary and we are committed to the requisite investment at our Halol facility". Replying to a question whether GMI plans to introduce a stripped-down version of the new car, he said "We intend to establish the position rather than going for a stripped down variant". He said the company would double the Corsa platform on an annualised basis.
