By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI MAY 15. The Government has decided to increase the financial relief for gaushalas in the cow-belt to Rs. 40 crores, the Union Finance Minister, Jaswant Singh, said here today while handing over cheques amounting to Rs 2.38 crores for nine such gaushalas in Rajasthan.

The amount is part of the Rs. 25 crores relief announced by the Prime Minister in December to save cattle in drought-affected Rajasthan.

The enhanced allocation will include gaushalas in Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat also. Besides, the Prime Minister has also provided fodder grant at the rate of Rs. 12 per animal per day for other gaushalas in Rajasthan.

The cheques handed over today were received by the Administrative Secretary (Relief) of the Rajasthan Government.

The Finance Minister also announced that a task force comprising members of the Finance Ministry, the Department of Agriculture and Animal Husbandry and the State Governments hit by drought had been constituted to identify pasture development in a bid to save cattle.

The task force has been given 90 days to submit its report.
