Kerala
By Our Staff Reporter
It would not have happened if the CPI(M) had any idea about the importance of the late C. Kesavan's Kozhencherry speech during the Freedom struggle, he told reporters here today. A statue of Kesavan was unveiled by the Speaker, Vakkom Purushothaman, where Kesavan had made the historic speech, on the occasion. Mr. Nayanar was scheduled to inaugurate the "Malayora sangamam.'' Mr. Nayanar was happy to attend the function and he had even prepared the inaugural speech, Mr. Natesan said. On three occasions before May 11 Mr. Nayanar had reassured me about his presence at the Kozhencherry function, he added. However, Mr. Nayanar had informed in advance that he would not be attending the Thiruvananthapuram function organised by the Yogam on May 18 when a statue of the founder Editor of the Kerala Kaumudi, K. Sukumaran, would be unveiled by the Deputy Prime Minister, L.K. Advani, Mr. Natesan said. Only after getting Mr. Nayanar's confirmation regarding his attending the Kozhencherry function that the Yogam gave an advertisement about the "Malayora sangamam'' in the CPI(M) mouthpiece, Deshabhimani, he said. Otherwise why should we promote that paper with advertisements, he asked. However, a group within the CPI(M) ordered Mr. Nayanar not to attend the function, Mr. Natesan said. He said Mr. Nayanar had always wanted to remain close to the SNDP Yogam, but a section within the CPI(M) was vehemently opposed to it. He said he was quite sure that Mr. Nayanar would be feeling sincerely sorry for being prevented from attending the "Malayora sangamam.'' The CPI(M) has a history of preventing its leaders from cultivating good relationship with the SNDP Yogam, Mr. Natesan said adding the same was done even to the JSS leader, K.R. Gouri, when she was with the CPI(M). When Mrs. Gouri had accepted an invitation to lay the foundation stone for the Sankar Institute of Medical Science (SIMS), the party prevented her from attending the function. However, the plaque at the SIMS complex shows that she had laid the foundation stone. Such actions made the CPI(M), which had ruled the State on its own, now depend on "walking sticks'' to come to power. He said the CPI(M) was distancing itself from the people and limiting itself to the four walls of the AKG Centre. Yet the younger generation in the CPI(M), especially the DYFI, was somehow showing a good degree of respect to Sree Narayana Guru. Whenever the DYFI organises an important meeting they were very particular in displaying posters and cutouts of the Guru, he said.
