Peace-keepers arrive in Burundi

BUJUMBURA (Burundi) May 18. The first group of Ethiopian soldiers who are to be part of a 3,500-strong African Union peacekeeping force arrived in this central African country on Sunday to help implement a cease-fire in Burundi's civil war.

Ethiopian Maj. Gen. Abebaw Tadese, who is to be the force's deputy commander, arrived in Bujumbura with 14 other officers, including logistics and communications officers.

``We are here to prepare and arrange everything ... for the coming troops,'' said Gen. Abebaw.

Ethiopia is expected to contribute some 980 troops to the peacekeeping force aiming to implement a cease-fire between Hutu rebels and the Tutsi-dominated army fighting a 9 1/2-year civil war.
