Tamil Nadu
By Our Special Correspondent
An official release noted Tamil Nadu was fully utilising benefits of the SSA (or EfA) for providing primary schools, within a km of each of 64,000 hamlets with a population of at least 300. Only 741 such habitations did not have access to a primary school within one km radius and even they would get the schools this year. About 97.3 per cent of all habitations had access to an upper primary school within a 3 km range, an official release said. Although Kerala had nearly 99 per cent enrolment at the primary level, the percentage of dropouts in the 6 - 11 age group increased there. In all, 83 per cent of children in 6-11 age group in Tamil Nadu and 90 per cent in the 12 - 14 age group enrolled in schools. The SC/ST student enrolment went up to 89 per cent from 82 per cent in the last two years since the implementation of the EfA. In the same period, the enrolment to upper primary went up to 87 per cent from 80 per cent. Hence, the number of students who were retained in schools (from primary to upper primary stage) increased significantly, while the dropout rate decreased from 16 per cent to 13 per cent in the two-year campaign, the release said.
