Officials said the surge was caused by a passing weak cyclone which caused two days of torrential rain and affected the coastal islands of Kutubdia, Moheshkhali, Sonadia and St. Martin's. When contacted, an official of the Bangladesh Red Crescent Society, said thousands of islanders were either staying in their flooded homes or have moved to shelters. "We are trying to collect details to send aids if necessary." The cyclone formed in the Bay of Bengal and alerts were sounded in Bangladesh and India. But it passed in a weakened form affecting coastal areas, said an official of the weather office. Over 60 Bangladeshis have died since early May in monsoon storms that have also damaged homes, uprooted trees and caused power cuts.
