After visiting Kanyakumari, Padmanabhapuram Palace, Thirparappu, Mathur, and Thekkurichi, Sanguthurai, and Thaengaipattinam beaches, Mr. Jagmohan said the Centre was considering the possibilities of constructing a Five-Star hotel with private participation at Kanyakumari, to woo foreign tourists. ``We are also exploring the possibilities of operating ultra-modern boats to the Vivekananda Rock and Thiruvalluvar statue and discussions are on with the State-owned Poompuhar Shipping Corporation, which operates boats to the rock memorials''. Beaches at Muttam would be beautified at an outlay of Rs. 1 crore and Rs. 50 lakhs would be spent to establish sports centre and cottages at Thekkurichi, he told presspersons at Kuzhithurai. While promoting eco-tourism in the places around the forts at Vattakottai and Udhayagiri with an outlay of Rs. 50 lakhs each, the wildlife would not be affected, the Minister said. Asked whether the Centre would support the tourism promotion activities around Thirparappu falls, Mathur and Pechipparai dam, Mr. Jagmohan said the Centre was ready to release Rs. 50 lakhs if the State Government submitted a project report.
The Union Minister of State, Pon Radhakrishnan; the District Collector, Gagandeep Singh Bedi, and officials were present.
