PPP denies 'deal' with Jamali Govt.

By B. Muralidhar Reddy

ISLAMABAD May 18. Amidst reports of negotiations between the functionaries of the Jamali Government and the opposition groups for a compromise on the Musharraf laws, the Pakistan People's Party (PPP) today denied reports in a section of the press that it had struck a `deal' with the Government.

A Government-opposition committee, constituted to work out a compromise on the controversial Musharraf laws, is about to submit its report to the Prime Minister, Mir Zafarullah Khan Jamali.

By all accounts the `uniform' of the President, Pervez Musharraf, continues to be the sticking point in the talks.

The Opposition insists that Gen. Musharraf would have to choose between his uniform, position as the Chief of Army Staff, and his status as President.

A section of the press here has speculated that senior functionaries of the Jamali Government are put on the job to woo the two former Prime Ministers, Benazir Bhutto and Nawaz Sharif.

One English daily has reported that the Government is willing to let Shahbaz Sharif, former Punjab Chief Minister and brother of the former Prime Minister, return.

A spokesman of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), in a statement, said that reports that the party was secretly negotiating with the regime to get `concessions' for Ms. Bhutto and Asif Ali Zardari (her husband).

The party maintained that such reports were aimed at maligning the party and its leadership.
