Amitabh to star in film on Mandela

DURBAN MAY 18. Film icon Amitabh Bachchan, currently in Johannesburg for the Indian International Film Awards ceremony, is to star in a film about the life of the Nobel Prize winner, Nelson Mandela.

This was disclosed by his South African friend and film producer, Anant Singh, who is to direct a film on Mandela's autobiography, `Long Walk to Freedom.'

Mr. Bachchan may play the role of Mac Maharaj, who was Transport Minister under Mandela's first democratic government and who spent 12 years on the Robben Island prison with Mr. Mandela and other ANC leaders, Mr. Anant Singh told the Sunday Times here.

``The movie will have a large component of Indians in it and Amitabh is one of the most talented performers in the world. We are possibly looking at him playing Mac Maharaj,'' Mr. Singh was quoted as saying.

He said Mr. Bachchan would be doing a screen test sometime soon.

``India was a strong supporter in the liberation struggle. So it is a matter of strengthening relations with South Africa and India. It may not be a big role but I will have to work it out with the director," said Mr. Singh.

Mr. Bachchan, who has been in Johannesburg for nearly a week for the just-ended IIFA awards ceremony, said he would love to play any part in the film. He's quoted in the same newspaper as saying he would love to be involved even if ``it's a small, little role, just walking by the sidelines or something''.
