Letters to the Editor
Sir, This refers to the article, "Trishuls, lathis and books", by Kancha Ilaiah ( May 16 ). It is true that books can work as a potent "weapon" for the mental uplift of the common man. But then, for this reason alone the religious/political outfits won't get them distributed. Trishuls and lathis, working symbolically, can drive a wedge between people of different castes and religions, by which political parties can extract ample electoral gain. It is difficult to imagine that such institutions will ever take suggestions from articles as this and act accordingly. Only by making gullible people understand how vile the motives of such institutions are can we in some way rescue them from falling into such fatal traps.
