Court vacation

Sir, — The Gujarat High Court's decision to dispense with the summer vacation to dispose of pending cases is laudable and exemplary (May 14). It is well known that the number of judges in courts is hardly adequate to cope with the huge backlog of cases. This contributes to an inordinate delay in rendering justice. And justice delayed is justice denied in judicial parlance. Certainly, the litigant public will welcome the court's move as it will go a long way in solving the problem of delayed justice. Will the other High Courts follow the good example of the Gujarat High Court?

P.K. Varadarajan,
Chennai

Sir, — With thousands of cases pending in different courts, the British legacy of summer vacation for the courts has become almost an anachronism. How heartening it is that the Gujarat High Court has decided to forego this vacation.

K. Gopalan,
Bangalore
