Not advisable

Sir, — The Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister, Mufti Mohammed Sayeed's suggestion that the Line of Control should be "softened" is unacceptable as terrorism would then grow in leaps and bounds. Without responding to the "hand of friendship", Pakistan is talking about its "principled stand" on the Kashmir issue, a no-war pact etc., to confuse India. New Delhi should be cautious and remember Kargil.

The National Security Adviser, Brajesh Mishra's suggestion that India, the U.S. and Israel should join hands to fight global terrorism should be implemented so that double standards are not allowed in dealing with terrorism.

Ambady Padmanabhan,
Vayalar, Kerala

Sir, — Apropos the Editorial, "A Pakistani gesture" ( May 16 ): The ban on the entry of Masood Azhar into Pakistan-occupied Kashmir and the unambiguous statement of Minoo Bhandara, one of the members of the Pak. goodwill mission team, that terrorists were not just the enemies of India but Pakistan as well, convey a positive message.

A momentum by way of an Indo-Pak. dialogue at this juncture is bound to result in peace, stability and prosperity, as envisaged in the Lahore Declaration. Perhaps, the roadmap has to be updated in the context of time and experience gained hitherto. A step-by-step approach would result in a cordial atmosphere and this would be catalytic in nature towards a satisfactory resolution of the Kashmir issue.

Syed Gowher Ali,
Chennai
