Speeding inferno

Sir, — The Editorial, "The speeding inferno" ( May 17 ), is a well-articulated piece of advice to the Railway Ministry to improve the safety norms to protect the unwary passengers. How could the railway staff be so careless as to attach a faulty chain system that prevented the train from being stopped? The Railway Minister thinks that by announcing an ex-gratia to the dependants of the deceased his responsibility ceases and he does this in a routine manner. Those who are responsible for the shocking tragedy should own moral responsibility and quit.

G.E.M. Manoharan,
Vadavalli, T.N.

Sir, — Even with the efflux of time, one cannot but recall the resignation of Lal Bahadur Shastri, owning moral responsibility for the Ariyalur accident in the mid-1950s.

S. Srimoolanathan,
Chennai
