'Clinching evidence' against actress' parents

Mumbai May 19. The Surat police claimed to have clinching evidence against the parents of actress, Shilpa Shetty, Surendra and Sunanda, in a case of alleged extortion in the form of telephonic conversation.

The excerpts of telephonic talks allegedly between Shilpa's parents and the underworld allegedly revealed that they used the underworld to recover modelling dues of Rs. 80 lakhs payable to the actress by a saree manufacturer in Surat.

Their lawyer said these steps needed to be proved in a court of law. ``The tape can be tampered with, it can be manufactured and it can be fabricated.''

Denying that the family had any connection with the underworld, he said Shetty had not phoned anybody — either underworld or hooligans. He had spoken to Pankaj Agarwal of the firm on the legal dues they owed. Mr. Surendra got bail from a court here after a case was registered against him and his wife. According to a top Surat police official, the threats were issued by a Malaysia-based gangster, Fazal-ur-Rehman alias Fazuo and his man, Uday Shetty, to industrialist Shivnarain alias Pankaj Agarwal.
