Doctors drop strike plan

By Our Staff Reporter

CHENNAI MAY 19. A plan by government doctors in Tamil Nadu to go on an indefinite strike from May 21 against `privatisation of medical education' has been dropped.

The decision has been taken ``in view of the sufferings of poor patients and to avoid inconvenience to the public and the Government, the Tamil Nadu Government Doctors' Association said in a statement here late tonight.

About 15 doctors were transferred and show-cause notices sent to others, who participated in the May 14 token strike. The Health Minister, S. Semmalai, refused to hold talks with them and threatened tougher action.

The association had announced a series of agitations and threatened to go on indefinite strike from May 21. In its statement, the TNGDA requested the Chief Minister to ``consider our demands kind heartedly''.

The Madras High Court was to hear to a public interest litigation petition on the strike on Tuesday.
