Ari Fleischer to quit

By Sridhar Krishnaswami

Washington May 19. The White House Spokesman, Ari Fleischer, said today that he will be quitting his present job in July and entering the private sector. He notified the President, George W. Bush, of the decision on Friday.

Mr. Fleischer has been rated high for running a tight show and is generally seen as a person who kept the Washington press corps in line. Even as he generally stayed out of any major controversy, there had been persistent rumours that Mr. Fleischer was having uneasy relationships with top aides to the President. But ultimately the decision to leave the White House job was his, it is being said.

There is no immediate word on who would replace Mr. Flesicher but speculation is that his current Deputy, Scott McClellan, would get the job. Others tipped for the job include the Spokesman for the Pentagon, Victoria Clarke, and the Republican strategist, Ed Gillespe.
