Letters to the Editor
Sir, The article `English at the Primary Level' ( Open Page, May 13 ) abounds in sentiments to which many a muted mouth may return an echo. In the 1960's when Jawaharlal Nehru said, "English is the window through which the wind of culture blows into the country", he was emphasising the necessity of continuing English education in India. It is highly satisfying to note that there are still enthusiasts desiring to teach English and raise its standard. But the question now as pointed out by the authors is not at what level we are introducing English, but who is going to handle the subject with justice. Much furore has been raised on the fall in the standard of English, but hardly ever has a sincere attempt been made to go into the actual causes of the fall. It is time that the nation gave a thought to finding inspired teachers through a test of competence.
