He has been remanded to judicial custody till May 27. The Enforcement Branch of the Kolkata police arrested Mr. Kumar this morning at his residence in Alipur. The arrest was made on the basis of a complaint by the Provident Fund Commissioner's office for alleged default of about Rs. 1.5 crores of PF contributions. He was produced during the day before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate S.C. Hazra, who rejected the bail application moved a senior official of the newspaper in the absence of a lawyer. According to the Enforcement Branch, the arrest came when the newspaper "failed" to clear the dues despite " repeated reminders". The PF Commissioner had filed an FIR on May 14. Anand Sinha, vice-president (operations) admitted in the court that the company failed to deposit the PF contributions as it " faced a financial crisis due to non-payment of more than Rs.6 crores by the Central and State Governments on account of advertisement dues."
