BJP criticises transfer of officials facing probe

By Our Staff Reporter

Bangalore May 20. S.Suresh Kumar, MLA, and `Mukhyamantri' Chandru, MLC, of the BJP today lambasted the S.M.Krishna Government for "rewarding nine officers, whose offices in the city municipal councils were raided by the Lokayukta, with promotion after revoking their suspension".

The two leaders recalled the Opposition's attack on the Government for the scam last year, following which the Chief Minister kept the officials under suspension. They regretted that the "navaratnas" were not only reinstated, but were also rewarded with super-time scale.

Demanding that the order be reversed, they said there was no need for the Government to come up with an alibi that the officers in question could not be kept under suspension beyond six months. There was no such rule, they said. They wanted to know if the Government had taken the opinion of the Lokayukta before revoking the suspension. Mr. Kumar said even the Lokayukta, N.Venkatachala, had expressed his helplessness over the development.

Meanwhile, the Accountant-General has also indicted the officers in his enquiry report.

The MLA cited the cases of the IAS officer, Monnappa, and the Mysore University Vice-Chancellor, and Kameswarappa, who were all rewarded by the Government with plum postings. It seemed that the Government was waging a war against the State by not just tolerating corruption, but by encouraging it. It would have been apt if the Government had observed May 19 as "protect corruption day".

Mr. Chandru said there was no need for nabbing the forest brigand, Veerappan, or punishing Kareem Lala, prime accused in the stamp paper racket when the corrupt were rewarded.
