According to AIRBEA, in a written communication issued on May 7, the central bank has declared the strike call by its staff union "illegal.'' While sticking to their call across the country, the union in return has served legal notices to the RBI authorities questioning the latter's eligibility in defining the legal status of the call. The reconciliation meeting on the strike call held on Monday had failed to resolve the crisis. Apart from AIRBEA, the Reserve Bank Workers Union (RBWU), controlling the sub-staffs, has also announced their participation in the tomorrow's strike at different locations. Talking to The Hindu AIRBEA official sources said that in its communication, the RBI declared that "the issues of the May 21 strike, may have no relevance to the RBI nor any of the said issues has any relation with the service conditions of employees in the Bank and, hence the call of strike given by AIRBEA is illegal.'' Further, if AIRBEA did not desist from the call, "the bank will be constrained to take appropriate actions including disciplinary actions against the employees who participate or instigate others to participate in the strike.'' Stating that the central bank had issued a similar notice to the union even when it went on strike on September 6, 2001, on issues related exclusively to their service conditions, AIRBEA officials here claimed that at least three legal notices were served to the RBI from Kolkata, Hyderabad and New Delhi.
