Cent per cent fire proof coach soon

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM May 20. The Union Minister of State for Railways, Bandaru Dattatraya, has said the cent per cent fire proof coach being manufactured for the railways will roll out from the Rail Coach Factory, Kaparthula, in the next four to five months.

Addressing a press conference here today, Mr. Dattatraya said the railways has chalked out several steps to make the 34,000 Second Class Sleeper coaches fire-proof in the wake of the May 15 ghastly fire accident in the Amritsar-bound Golden Temple Frontier Mail that claimed 38 lives.

As part of improving safety of the coaches, the vestibules of the coaches will be made cent per cent fire retardantas in Europe and in the United States.The Minister said the formica panels being used, as side panels in the railway coaches at present will be replaced with Glass Reinforced Plastic (GRP). All coaches of the railways will be replaced with GRP in the next one to two years.
